It’s the weekend! And you know what that means: we’ve once again put together a list of awesome new apps and games for you to check out. There’s a new social networking app, a new video editing app, and even one that lets you play with tornadoes! So enough stalling, let’s get to it!

Firefly – What’s happening nearby?

Looking for a new social networking app to checkout?  Meet Firefly. Kind of like a weird combination of YikYak and Snapchat, Firefly is all about what is happening nearby and right now. You can share your location, and a status update of what you’re doing, and see what your friends and other fireflies are up to as well. All of your posts disappear after 7 days, and like an actual firefly, you control when you share with nearby friends by turning your light on or off. This app is available for free.

Infuse – Video filters

Infuse is a video editor built for the Vine and Instagram era. In the app you can open up your favorite video clip, crop it or cut it and then apply your filters and effects. There’s at least 12 filters included, with others available as in-app purchases, and then there are the usual controls for brightness, contrast and saturation. Everything is presented in a well-designed, streamlined interface that allows you to customize a video and quickly share it with your favorite social network in less than a minute. This app is available for free.

I know what you’re thinking: not another weather app! But this isn’t your typical temperature-teller. Weather by Tinybop is actually an interactive model that allows you to play with and learn about the sun, air, water, temperature, wind, and even extreme weather. So you can dive into a cloud and see what it's made of. Make it rain, make it snow, or throw out a tornado or hurricane. All of these elements combined with original artwork and sophisticated sound design make for an incredible experience. Assassin’s Creed Identity

Easily one of the biggest game releases this week, Assassin’s Creed Identity is the first action RPG game of the acclaimed franchise. In it, players must explore the Italian Renaissance through the eyes of their own assassin, complete dozens of missions and unravel the epic mystery of The Crows. Ubisoft used the Unity game engine to create beautiful graphics, and every place you visit is an open map for you to explore. The Walking Dead: Michonne

For those who haven’t yet had their fill of The Walking Dead game content, I present to you Michonne – A TellTale miniseries. Each square is a sound of its own, and each different color is a group of sounds, so just tap more squares to add complexity to your loop. Everything you create can be recorded and shared via SoundCloud, Facebook, Twitter, Messages, or Mail. Polyphonic includes two sound worlds to utilize, with three more available via in-app purchase.

Like the original, Tower of Fortune 2 employs a neat slot machine mechanic for battling opponents. Tap the button to spin the reels and tap again to stop them in hopes of dealing damage, collecting gold, or obtaining a special item. You're able to stop the reels mid spin as well to perform a combo or avoid an attack, but it will cost you additional gold. The game includes nine worlds to explore, seven mini-games, 50 challenging events, more than 60 unique enemies, 50 random abilities, 24 NPCs, and achievements via Game Center.

The Sequence takes a rather creative approach to a tired genre. The object of the game is to get the binary cells transferred into their nodes using various modules. Modules can push and pull binary cells along with other modules. But that's only the half of it. Not only must you properly determine where to place each module, you must also figure out the correct order in which they must operate. It's quite the challenge. The game includes 72 levels along with a sandbox mode to play around with.

Toca Hair Salon Me ( $2.99 → FREE )

Like all of Toca Boca's other apps, Toca Hair Salon Me is highly interactive. You must first either choose a headshot from your library or take a new one. Your face will then be placed within the app along with a funky hairdo. You can then lather, rinse, color, straighten, curl, cut, crimp, comb, shave, and even grow your hair longer. The possibilities are nearly endless!

Popular platformer HoPiKo goes free as Apple’s App of the Week

Apple on Thursday updated its App of the Week promotion with Laser Dog’s ‘HoPiKo.’ This means that for the next 7-days, you’ll be able to pick up the popular 8-bit platformer for free, for both your iPhone and iPad–a savings of $2.

HoPiKo is described by its developers as an “intense speed run platformer where you get to save gaming.” Players must jump from platform to platform, exploiting shortcuts and ripping through hundreds of gorgeous, hand-crafted levels.

While there’s no shortage of charming 8-bit platformers on the App Store, HoPiKp simply raises the bar with its stunning quality.
