YouMap, Purp To-Do List, RecordBird, and other apps to check out this weekend

July 08, 2017 by RSS Feed

This week’s edition of our App of the Week roundup features a new map-based social app, a to-do list with a twist, and a new app that keeps you informed on new music releases from your favorite artists. And as usual, we’ve selected two great new games for you to check out.

YouMap

Events are constantly shaping the way we interact with each other and helping us decide where we go on any given day. With YouMap, you can let the world know what you're thinking, seeing and feeling, while getting the latest updates at a moment's notice. Obviously we’re skeptical anytime a new social network comes on the scene, but YouMap seems to have the UI and user engagement needed to gain some traction. The early reviews are glowing, with one user saying this is the first social app to “get the map thing right.” So if you’re feeling adventurous this weekend, see what’s going on around you with YouMap. It’s available for free.

Purp To-Do List & Goal Tracker

Purp is a well-organized helper, to-do list and task manager app that allows you to achieve your goals and complete your daily tasks. Whatever your goals are—like completing projects, managing daily tasks, work todos, learning languages, mastering skills, sports or travel—Purp will help you to collect, keep, organize and track them, so you can reach them. Features include iCloud sync, task timer, progress dash board, and much more. The first reviews on iTunes are pretty rough, but the UI are feature set are unique enough that I think it’s worth checking out. Purp To-Do List & Goal Tracker is available for free.

RecordBird

Record Bird informs you about new and upcoming music releases of your favorite artists and genres. Be the first to know of a new album or single by your favorite bands and musicians and share the news directly with your friends. With Record Bird, you will never miss a new release again. There have been more than a few apps that have tried a similar strategy, that didn’t gain much traction. But the early user feedback (4.5 stars on 90 ratings in iTunes) suggest this one might have finally gotten it right. RecordBird is available for free.

Mini DAYZ – Survival Game

How long can you survive in a post-apocalyptic world? Find out in Mini DAYZ—an official pixel art rendition of the massively successful PC survival game (played by over 3 million fans). It’s you against the world in Mini DAYZ: explore a randomly generated map and scavenge for food, ammo and supplies. Use anything you find to craft advanced items. Protect yourself against aggressive infected and ferocious wolves. But most important of all: make sure to stay dry, warm and well fed at all times. The weather out there can quickly get under your skin and your wounds will not heal without you treating them. Mini DAYZ – Survival Game is available for free.

Flippy Hills

Flippy Hills is an original arcade game with cool physics that will give you plenty of thrills, spills, epic wins, fails and tricks in two modes of your choice: campaign or arcade. Campaign mode features an adventure spanning over dozens of levels that get progressively harder, and arcade mode puts you in an endless barrage of assault courses to compete with your friends and gain records. The gameplay is surprisingly addictive, but you are going to have to put up with some annoying ads unless you’re willing to fork over a few bucks via an in-app purchase. Flippy Hills is available for free (with some IAPs).

Kalimba is a Cute and Delightful Puzzle Platformer

July 07, 2017 by RSS Feed

Kalimba ($3.99) by Flashbulb ApS is a cheerful and charming puzzle platformer that’s sure to delight players of all ages. If you liked titles such as Mr Future Ninja and Sally’s Law, then you’ll enjoy what Kalimba has to offer.

As someone who grew up in the golden age of gaming with the NES and Genesis consoles, platformers have a special place in my heart. Nearly all of the games I’ve played as a kid were platformers, so it’s not surprising that I’m always eager to check new ones out. Another genre that I love are puzzles, because they keep my mind stimulated. So when the two are combined, I can’t resist. That’s why when I saw Kalimba on the App Store, I had to check it out for myself. Needless to say, this is one that does not disappoint.

Visually, Kalimba is gorgeous. The game features an aesthetically pleasing minimalist design that is full of geometric shapes that come to life. Everything is rendered in 2-D with bright and vibrant colors and amazing textures. The totems and narrator have distinctive appearances so it’s always easy to tell each character apart from one another. Environments dynamically change once the toggles get activated, and it’s all done in a seamless transition that’s rather mesmerizing with particle effects. Animations in Kalimba are buttery smooth and fluid, with zero lag on my iPhone 7. There’s also voice acting through the narration, and it’s incredibly well done. A quirky soundtrack plays in the background, which fits in with the overall quirky theme of the game. Overall, Kalimba is beautifully designed inside and out in terms of visual and audio.

Like many other puzzle platformers, Kalimba is level-based, and players must progress through the game one stage at a time. The story of Kalimba involves a good and evil shaman, with the latter overcoming the former and spreading darkness throughout the land. But the spirit of the good shaman is able to possess totems in order to restore the light to the land. And that’s where the player comes in.

To help the shaman with the ultimate goal, one must help guide the two totems simultaneously through treacherous environments to rebuild the original totem pole. Your score on each stage is determined by the number of pickups you’ve collected, and any deaths will deduct from that. Otherwise, there are no stars to collect, and no time limit, so you can enjoy Kalimba at your own pace.

The controls in Kalimba are easy and intuitive. In the bottom left corner are directional buttons that let the totem pieces move left and right. On the other side are the action buttons, letting players make the totem pieces jump and swap places. Remember — the totems move together simultaneously, so when you need one to jump, the other one does too. And sometimes only one totem can pass through a specific colored barrier, so the timing of swapping is key.

My testing of the game was with my iPhone. But for iPad players, there’s an iPad-only co-op mode where two players can work together on one device. I wasn’t able to test this out, but the developers say it can “make or break any friendship,” so take heed!

The real challenge with Kalimba is collecting all of the golden totems. These elusive totems are only earned by collecting all pickups on a stage without dying. Considering the difficulty of the game as you go, this is much easier said than done. To keep players coming back, there are secret challenge rooms too, in case you’re looking for more replay value.

Kalimba is a true gem of a puzzle platformer on the App Store. The game has a stunning aesthetic that is true eye candy, and the music is just delightful. The controls are easy to work with and responsive, so there was no problem with accidental deaths or mistakes. The concept of the game is simple enough, but having both characters moving together makes everything much more challenging, which is always welcome. The co-op mode for iPad players is a nice addition.

While Kalimba is an excellent game, it’s definitely one that can easily frustrate less-skilled players who may not have a lot of patience. I also wish that co-op was available on iPhones as well, but I can see why it’s an iPad-only feature.

I have only recently started Kalimba, but I can see this as being a title I return to until I beat it. Kalimba is perfect for sitting down with and enjoying a longer play session. And as a fan of beautiful aesthetics, I will enjoy every minute of playing it. The music is zen-like, and the controls are super responsive. The levels are pretty lengthy, and you get a lot of content for your money, so the value is there. Kalimba is definitely one that shouldn’t be missed.

I recommend grabbing Kalimba if you’re a fan of puzzle platformer games. Kalimba is on the App Store as a universal download on the iPhone and iPad for $3.99.

Popular photo app Enlight is now free, adds desktop-class editing features

July 07, 2017 by RSS Feed

enlight photofox is a new freemium mobile photo app that introduces desktop-class editing, including layers.

desktop photo editors use layers to make a number of different effects possible, but now a free ios photo app is bringing the capability to mobile devices. on july 7, lightricks announced enlight photofox, a free, second-generation version of the popular enlight photo editor that was named apple’s app of the year in several countries and ranked as the 11th top-selling paid ios app in 2016.

while the original enlight app costs $4 on the app store, enlight photofox comes with a freemium model and the option to subscribe to unlock extra in-app features. despite the change in pricing, the new app brings several features from the original version as well as adding several new ones. the developers say the second generation strikes a balance between function and usability.

the new version brings layers to the mobile app, allowing users to put multiple images into a single file. blending modes allow for different effects such as creating a double exposure. each layer can be edited individually with the suite of photo tools as well, the developer says, making it akin to a desktop photo editor.

enlight photofox also includes an “app-within-an-app” in the form of darkroom, a panel of controls for adjusting tone, contrast, and the details inside an image. the app is also pre-loaded with a number of extras for photo editing, including fonts, graphics, and presets.

“enlight was a huge step forward in empowering creativity on mobile, and this new version will push the boundaries even further,” said zeev farbman, the co-founder and ceo of lightricks. “our users are making amazing artwork on mobile and they’re increasingly looking to unleash their creativity with powerful yet simple mobile tools that can carry out even the most complex creative tasks, and enlight photofox is built to support just that.”

lightricks is the same company behind facetune, a portrait retouching app. combined, the original enlight and facetune apps generated 11 million downloads. the second version, facetune 2, recently added the ability to turn selfies into emojis, and, like the second generation of enlight, also switched to a subscription model.

enlight photofox is available for ios from the app store.
