Rocket League Sideswipe volleyball guide - tips and tricks for season two's new game mode

February 07, 2022 by RSS Feed

Rocket League Sideswipe's second season just introduced a new game mode: volleyball. Although it might seem straightforward enough translate all of the strategy from the game's default mode or previous basketball variant to do well, here, Rocket League Sideswipe changes in some pretty significant ways when all of a sudden you're trying to keep the ball from hitting the ground on half of the game field.

If you're still trying to wrap your mind around how this mode works and what you need to do to be a competent teammate, you're in the right place! I've been playing this new game mode extensively since its launch last week, and have learned a few tricks on how to be just that. Read on below!

Win those face-offs

Every mode of Rocket League Sideswipe starts with a face-off, but these events feel way more impactful in volleyball. Getting the ball into enemy territory and keeping it there is key to scoring, and winning the face-off gives you a head start on putting one over on your opponents.

I have found that I can win a majority of face-offs my holding down boost and tapping the jump button repeatedly during the countdown. Because of the jump tapping, I often am able to have a faster reaction to the actual match start, allowing me to get to the ball ahead of my opponent. If you manage to do the same, you just want to make sure you hit the ball over toward enemy territory, and see if you can keep it there to secure a score.

Stay grounded

Since volleyball is all about keeping a ball in the air, you may be tempted to launch yourself into the skies at every chance you get to contest the ball or try to score. This is a surefire way to overplay on the ball and be out of position to defend a shot from your opponent.

In a lot of circumstances, you're better served keeping your car on the ground and prevserving your boost for when you can not only defend against a scoring attempt, but also launch a counter shot. Blocking shots is also easier to do from the ground because your goal is literally the ground you're driving on (just drive under the ball to stop a score!) and you don't have to worry about accidentally launching the ball downward. Jumping or boosting at the ball from the grounded position will always send the ball upward!

Defend the net

If you happen to find the ball in enemy territory, you actually don't have to do a ton to end up with a point. Gravity is always working against the ball to bring it toward the goal, so sometimes it's more prudent to try and just stop the ball from going back over the net than boosting around trying to spike the ball in for a score.

This may not be a particularly flashy way of playing, but it is effective. Defending the net limits opportunities for your opponents to score, keeps you from ever being out of position to defend or score, and can cause frustration for your opponent. I have yet to encounter any Rocket League Sideswipe volleyball players that don't make mistakes and accidentally miss the ball or nudge it into their own goal. Own goals are frustrating and can send one or more of the opposing team into a frustration spiral that leads to more mistakes and scores for you.

Don't play too passively

As much as I've warned against overplaying and leaving your goal zone undefended, you also don't just want to sit and wait for a shot to come so you can block it. You'll have to pick your battles carefully, but if you just sit on the ground and wait for the ball, the opposing team will start to follow their shots more closely and can just bump the ball off your roof for easy, undefendable points.

This is probably good advice for Rocket League Sideswipe more generally, but try to pay attention to how much other players are boosting and when they may not be able to react to a steal or contest very well. These are the times where you really should go all out on the ball because if you can take control while potential defenders have to recharge their boost on the ground, you have a huge advantage that you can turn into points pretty easily.

Apex Legends Mobile soft-launches for Android in select regions

February 04, 2022 by RSS Feed

Apex Legends is already a well-known battle royale shooter on PCs and consoles. In the last few years, a lot of FPS titles have made their way to mobile. Following suit, Apex Legends also announced ‘Apex Legends Mobile’ way back in 2020.

Since then, the game has gone through multiple beta tests in India, the Philippines, Mexico, Hong Kong, Turkey, and more. Finally, EA has decided to go for a soft launch in a handful of countries; Australia, Argentina, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Indonesia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and the Philippines.

Respawn, the Apex Legends creator announced this via a tweet:

As of now, people in these countries can access the early version of the game. The game is available only for Android. They can download it from Google Play. Meanwhile, iOS users in these regions might have to wait a little longer to step into Olympus.

If you have played Apex Legends on PC or console before, you will like the mobile counterpart. It follows the same 60-player battle royale pattern with 3 players on each team. As always, players can choose from several Legends and enter the battlefield.

For the beta tests, the download size of the game was about 2GB. We can assume that the size will be more or less the same.

So far, Respawn Entertainment has not provided a date for the soft launch. However, the next Apex Legends season ‘Defiance’ is set to release on February 8. So it's likely that the mobile launch will happen on February 8th.

Respawn will share more details about the global and iOS release, in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, players can pre-register for Apex Legends Mobile on Google Play. You will be notified as soon as the game becomes available.

Rocket League Sideswipe’s Season Two brings Volleyball, Casual Mode, and More

February 02, 2022 by RSS Feed

Rocket League Sideswipe's second season just came out today and we're pretty excited. In case you missed it, Psyonix's ground-up reimagining of Rocket League for mobile was our top pick for Game of the Year in 2021, and as time has worn on, we're event more convinced it was the right call.

Just like many other service-oriented multiplayer games, Rocket League Sideswipe's new season is all about switching things up a bit and giving you new rewards for your committed play. As was the case with season one, all of this new stuff is available completely free of charge, so although there is a battle pass and currency to grind out, there is no way to pay your way around it (and hopefully this continues to be the case moving forward).

Probably the biggest change to come to the game is the addition of a new Volleyball mode. This mode replaces the Hoops variant that was in the game at launch, meaning there are still only three game modes to choose from. This new mode plays just about how you'd expect, with a net in the middle of the arena and goals on the floor, though there are a few twists. Toward the back of each floor is a safe area that doesn't count as goal territory, some of which is also a ball launch pad. This sets up some interesting strategic possibilities, though it seems like everyone is still just trying to get used to launching the ball downward.

On top of Volleyball, Rocket League Sideswipe now also supports ranked and casual modes of play, allowing you to pair up with friends, pass off your phone for someone to try it, or just opt to play matches that have no bearing on your overall ranked score. The only caveat of the casual mode is that Volleyball is not available for casual play for whatever reason. Otherwise, completing casual matches can still contribute to your battle pass advancement and item unlocks with no issue. One last note on casual matches: Interestingly, you can queue for matchmaking in both ranked and casual matches at the same time, so if your goal is just to find whatever kind of match the fastest, you can do that.

Overall, season two of Rocket League Sideswipe seems to inject some additional energy into what still feels like one of the freshest and most frenetic multiplayer experiences you can have on mobile. With rank resets, a totally new mode to tackle, and casual play available, there's never been a better time to jump into this excellent game.

Phantom Blade: Executioners, S-Game's KungFuPunk action RPG, begins its Closed Beta Test today

January 28, 2022 by RSS Feed

S-Game has kicked off its first Closed Beta Test for Phantom Blade: Executioners, inviting a selected few to get first dibs on the upcoming KungFuPunk action RPG on mobile. The CBT officially begins this January 28th, and beta testers will receive cool in-game goodies as a thank-you for participating.

Phantom Blade: Executioners lets players experience hardcore action with full-color animation cutscenes that blend dark fantasy with Chinese kungfu. The noir storyline involves deep conspiracies that can decide the fate of the world, as well as a mysterious body mod that seemingly requires sacrificing your humanity to acquire. You'll play as a member of "The Organization" in a world populated by kungfu masters.

With his red cloak and his signature white hair, Soul is the youngest Nether Envoy of the Organization. Meanwhile, Mu Xiaokui is his childhood friend and is the daughter of the creator of the Organization. Both characters will be playable during the CBT, where players will have to rely on their combo-chaining skills (with no auto-combat option) to defeat their foes. Players will also collect Phantoms to augment their weapons for special combat bonuses like enhanced firepower or healing abilities.

To thank testers during the Closed Beta Test, Phantom Blade: Executioners will offer them a limited edition in-game costume when the game officially launches. Character progress will be wiped, but accounts will remain after the test. If you’d like to join the CBT then make sure to check out Phantom Blade: Executioners’ official Twitter and Facebook page to find out how.
