Les Verbes by Wave Digital provides users with a straight-forward interactive technique for mastering verbs with their various tenses and conjugations in the French language.

Les Verbes can be customized to fit a user’s personal language skills and goals, and this app is currently available for free through the App Store.

For anyone who has ever studied French, the issue of various conjugations and tenses is certainly one that he/she will have encountered and quite possibly struggled with.

Les Verbes is an app designed to help ease the struggles of the intermediate French student by providing interactive study challenges at the convenience of iOS devices. Unlike in simple flashcard memorization games, Les Verbes forces users to actually type in their answers to the various challenges.

This way, learning the correct spelling (and not just randomly guessing the answers) is a skill that is more likely to be acquired through using the app.

At this point in its (early) development the app supports 31 common verbs, from acheter to vouloir, across present, past, and future tenses. You can train on all of them or select a subset for more targeted training. The english translation of each verb is provided.

A typical drill will show you the english verb and a pronoun. So, for example, you might see “They go” and the answer starting with “ils”. For this one you would fill in the third person present tense form of “to go”. Every challenge also has a hint which tells you the french infinitive and what tense is required.

You can opt for daily reminders, at the time you prefer, to do the drills but can only start on Monday. It would be helpful if you could select the day you want to start, or restart, your sessions.

Aside from more verbs, more tenses (i.e. “le Plus-Que-Parfait”) and real world sentences, we’d like to see voice output so you can hear the correct pronunciation of the various challenges, as well as voice input for your answer so you can train on both writing and speaking.

It should be noted, however, that the developers of this app let you know that they will be expanding the list of verbs and are happy to hear your feedback for additional features.

Appearance and Layout:

The overall appearance of this app can best be described as “practical.” All of the graphics and various aspects of the aesthetic design of Les Verbes are utilitarian towards quick practice drills.

We appreciate this and for what it is, the design gets the job done.

Les Verbes features a simple user interface that can be easily navigated with no need for prior instructions.

Users can choose to start their training or select the settings symbol in the upper right to change any of the default settings.

As stated by the deveopers, this app is targeted at the intermediate skill level, so the expectation is that you know these verbs but can benefit from some practice.

Les Verbes is a free app and is a worthwhile addition to the language learning folder of anyone who is seeking to improve their knowledge of french verbs and feels they would benefit from a brief daily verb drill.

Specifically speaking, Les Verbes will best suit the needs of anyone who is having difficulty mastering the use of verbs within the french language.
