Free Apps to Download TODAY ONLY 01/29/2016

January 29, 2016 by macjeff

Rails , Jungle Rumble: Freedom, Happiness, and Bananas , SORUS SHIELD FREE and more

iPhone:

Star Scales Pro For Guitar ( $9.99 → FREE ) Learn to play guitar like a star with this music app. It’s ideal for amateur musicians who want to acquire proficiency and confidence when playing guitar. You’re tasked with completing tracks and guiding trains into their matching stations, all while keeping them from crashing into each other. You’re able to control the signals to stop them in their tracks and flip the switches to lead them in different directions. Not all of the trains operate in the same way, however, so you’ll have to stay on your toes. The game includes 60 levels, 12 train types, iCloud support, and leaderboards and achievements via Game Center. A rival tribe is stealing all of your bananas. It’s up to you to tap on the screen in order to fight off the red monkeys and reclaim what’s yours. You’ll have to pay close attention to how the invaders move and learn their behaviors in order to complete each level. The game includes a fairly quick yet informative tutorial to ensure you get the hang of the rhythm mechanic. You’ll be tapping to the beat in no time. Today only: Unlock all 101 missions and five arcade levels Sorus Shield has to offer free of charge! Head to the shop at the bottom of the main screen and tap on “Buy All Arcade Levels” and “Buy All Missions.” Confirm your freebies with a tap and enjoy. Aliens are trying to take control of the universe with special light mines. Only the spaceship Sorus can stop them thanks to its unique shield. It’s your job to dissolve the mines by creating complete lines. You’re able to tap to rotate the encapsulated mines, and swipe to move them along the lines. When you want to lock them in place, swipe up. Completed lines will remove all of the mines within and leave the others to come crashing down into place, allowing you to create cascading combos. Learning how to play guitar doesn’t have to be difficult, at least not with Star Scales Pro. The app throws out the idea of using complicated charts and instead has you practicing scale patterns. Each scale features fingering and note names in all positions on the fretboard, making it remarkably easy to master a specific pattern. Since each scale and all its patterns are taught one at a time, you won't become overwhelmed. The app includes all blues, rock, and jazz guitar scales, zoom, a random scale pattern generator, and the ability to share scales via email or social networks.

All of its conversion categories are laid out on a single screen. Just tap on the one you want, choose your two units, and enter a value. Units can be flipped with a tap, and you’re able to jump to the next category via a button in the lower right corner of the screen. The app also includes 10 themes to choose from, and live currency updates.   Rails ( $2.99 → FREE ) The official remake of the 90s sensation, Shortline Railroad. Take a trip down memory lane. Hyperspektiv, ZCast, Rogue Agent, and more apps to check out this weekend

January 23, 2016 by macjeff

This past week may have been slow for the news cycle, but it didn’t stop us from pumping out some useful information, like how to watch live TV on Apple TV, how to remove iOS configuration profiles, and how to open a new private window in Safari.

If you’ve had your fill of learning new things about your iPhone and are looking for some fun content to download, check out our list of apps and games this weekend.

Rogue Agent

I love a good stealth game, especially when the game has interesting elements to it. It’s about more than just avoiding getting caught. In this game, players must escape rooms while avoiding detection from some fairly uninterested guards. You can pick up interesting gadgets, like a scramble suit that will camouflage you so you can walk right past guards, and play mini games, like lock picking or wiring. There are also extras that you can unlock by taking more difficult routes to the exit, like designer commentary and additional levels. This game is available for $2.99.

Hyperspektiv

Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be a new way to add filters to photos, Phantom Force comes along and mixes it all up again. This app distorts your images in real-time with what the company calls, “techno-kaleidoscope.” You pick one of the psychedelic filters and then slide your finger across the view screen to watch it transform into weirder images. You can record the effects in real time and save it as a mini clip. It works with photo or video and will eventually support camera roll imports (for now, you have to use the in-app camera) This app is available for $1.99.

The Westport Independent

What would it be like to live in a country where you couldn’t just write whatever you wanted? What if your job depended on your ability to silence the opposition? What if the government and the rebels wanted your help? Who’s side would you take? This game explores these concepts as a censorship simulator that takes place in a post-war country where the government wants to crush the rebellion and the rebels want your help. Your job is to delete sentences, alter context, and generally censor content before it goes to print. This game is available for $4.99.

5oosh

In this new age of social media, it is easier than ever to connect with celebrities in a more personal way. Whether you follow them on Twitter, Instagram, or whatever social medium you prefer, you can see what your favorite actors, musicians, and artists are up to. This app takes it one step further and provides an outlet for famous people to engage with their fans more directly. Celebrities could, potentially, have a one-on-one conversation with fans, send pre-recorded messages to specific people, and offer personalized memorabilia. Now, it’s just a matter of getting your favorite actor to actually use the service. This app is available for free.

Dungelot: Shattered Lands

Fans of the roguelike genre will be happy to know that there is another Dungelot title in the App Store now. In this dungeon crawl, players must defeat the typical enemies, like skeleton warriors and ghastly ghosts, and also watch out for such new enemies as zombie cows and evil mushrooms. With a minesweeper style mechanic, players try to navigate a room full of hidden monsters, while grabbing the loot before hitting the exit. You can trade your current power for a better one if you come across a merchant, and unlock mini games if you don’t die first. This game is available for $3.99.

ZCast

Many of us secretly wish we could put together and publish an awesome podcast that would somehow change the world, or at least entertain our friends. However, creating and managing a podcast can be daunting, and even scary for some. Plus, you tend to need special equipment, software, and at least a little know-how to make it work. With this app, all you need to do is tap a few buttons and you are casting your opinion to the world, in real-time. You can easily invite others to join your conversation, and get immediate feedback from your listeners with comments. This app is available for free.

Lords of Discord

It’s time to get your classic RPG on. From the same game development company that brought you Warhammer 40,000: Space Wolf comes a new tale with an old-school theme. Gather a party of adventurers and head out into a world, ravaged by evil. Fight, in turn-based combat, against the likes of orcs, dark elves, and those pesky undead. Each member of your party has useful abilities that will aid you as a group. You can overthrow territories and use the land’s resources to help build and advance your own castle. This game is available for free.

Venture Kid, Concepts, Interact, and more apps to check out this weekend

January 16, 2016 by macjeff

This week, Apple seeded its first iOS 9.3 beta to developers (and then later to the public), which seems to have a lot of cool new features, including some that might be thought of as stealing someone else’s thunder.

If you are wondering what the next app that Apple will decide is cool enough to “Sherlock,” take a peek at what we have listed below. These apps and games may start small, but only time will tell just how big they get and who’s keeping an eye on them.

Venture Kid

If you’ve been hankering for a bit of that old-timey Game Boy love, but don’t remember where you put your handheld, take a gander at this retro 8-bit platformer. It is rife with all the elements that make a good arcade classic, but doesn’t compromise on style. Players must maneuver through nine complex levels with all of the traditional mechanics you loved as a kid, including spikes, monsters, flying baddies, and more. Control the character movement using virtual left and right movement buttons and A/B action buttons. Collect power ups to give you special moves and find the secret tunnels on each level. This game is available for free.

Concepts

Note taking on the iPhone just got a huge boost. This app is a sketchbook on the surface, but a detailed illustrator’s tool book under the hood. It has dozens of features, like intelligent separation layers so you can trace on top of something, vector brushes for graphic design, scalable paper sizes with layout grids, and different types of paper options, like transparencies or graph paper. You can design complex illustrations with airbrush tools and a nearly unlimited number of colors. The app has been around for a while, but was recently updated with iPhone support. This app is available for free.

Make the Cut

Sometimes, it is comforting to play familiar games (I always go back to Pokemon Yellow when I’m feeling sad). But, playing the same thing over and over again does start to get old after a while. This game mixes the familiar mechanic of Tetris with a newer mechanic that requires swiping to slice apart blocks with precision timing. Cut the falling block to just the right size to fit it in between the rest of the stacks. The further you advance, the more difficult it gets to measure up within a short amount of time. This game is available for free.

CameraLends

I recently discovered this service, which is originally based out of San Francisco. You can lend out or rent other people’s camera equipment for drastically less than it would cost to rent it from a professional service. Users sign up and either post their gear or find something to rent. You can find out how much an item costs and reserve it for a specific number of days. Currently, it covers about three-dozen major cities, but the more people use it, the bigger it will get. The app makes it easier for users to search for and request items in their area. This app is available for free.

Close Your Eyes

When I was a kid, if I thought I saw something scary, I would look away or squeeze my eye shut as tight as possible. I guess I imagined that, if I close my eyes, the bad thing would just disappear. In this game, nothing scary happens, really. But, the melancholy sound effects and eerie music will make you think you’ve just entered a ghost’s nursery. Players try to get a ball from the starting point to the end point by bouncing it off of platforms. Oh, and you can make things disappear by touching the screen. When you take your finger off, the traps, platforms, and monsters all come back (Just kidding. There are no monsters). This game is available for $2.99.

Interact

If you tend to meet a lot of people on a regular basis, organizing their contacts can get downright overwhelming. With this app, you can manage contacts by putting them into groups. So, if you’ve collected numbers for the employees of a new startup, you can gather them all into one main group with just a tap. You can also send a message or email to a single contact or entire group, send messages from other apps, like Dropbox or iCloud Drive, and share files and links to contacts from within other apps using the Share extensions feature. This app is available for $4.99.

Harvest Moon: Seeds of Memories

The popular farm simulation series that charmed Nintendo console gamers for 20 years has a new episode. “Seeds of Memories” is the first under the Natsume brand to launch on iOS since 2009. It is more than just a farming simulation. It is also a fun-filled adventure game where players must help out the townsfolk by completing quests for them in hopes that they will provide you with those rare seeds. You can grow crops, raise animals, care for pets, get married, and enter daily contests, like cooking and dancing. This game is available for $9.99.

TMNT, Brandr, Proud, and more apps to check out this weekend

January 09, 2016 by macjeff

Earlier this week, gadget makers blew our minds with new products at the Consumer Electronics Show that will hopefully come out sometime in 2016. We also finally found out how much Oculus Rift costs and when we will get our hands on it.

It was a bigger week for hardware than it was for apps. Although, if you were lucky, you downloaded Vidyo before it was pulled from the App Store. As the weekend rolls by, if you are looking for apps and games that are still available, check out our list below.

TMNT – Portal Power

For a decade or so, it seemed like the popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had all but died. However, the reptilian superheroes have managed to rekindle interest in younger generations of fans. The comic book stars now have a game from Nickelodeon on iOS. Not entirely unlike the original arcade classic, in this game, players must fight waves of bad guys as they run from street to street and rooftop to rooftop. You can fight with all four Turtles, switching between them while in battle. The new version has plenty of gameplay features for the more refined 21st century palate. This game is available for $5.99.

Brandr

Our access to content on the Internet has made it possible for everyone to create their own graphic designs without needing special help from professionals for the simplest of projects. This app provides dozens of overlays and stock photos to help you create beautiful advertisements. You can upload you company logo for a more personalized look. For a monthly subscription fee, you will have access to analytics and insights about how customers react to your designs and whether your brand is working on not. This app is available for free.

Jetpack Fighter

Taking a joyride on a jetpack is probably lots of fun. But, you know what would be even more fun? Beating the snot out of people with a jetpack. In this game, players fly through level after level of narrow pathways, killin’ all the baddies. Wielding a sword and a suit that lets you fly, bash your way through dozens of angry robots. Collect coins and other loot along the way and use it to unlock new fighters, gear, and more. The faster you get through a level, the higher your score, so practice a speeding attack to become the best. This game is available for free.

Proud

One common thing we all try to do in the New Year is set goals and resolutions to make ourselves better people. Getting organized and completing tasks are common goals. With this app, you can rethink how you organize and complete tasks. It has dozens of helpful features for getting things done. Instead of creating a basic list of things to do today, why not separate those things by what time of day you want to have them done by? You can defer tasks if you can put them off until later, set reminders to take stress-relieving breaks, and pushes tasks back if you just need more time. This app is available for $4.99.

Desqueeze

Not everyone needs to resize groups of photos all at once, but those of us that do, kind of hate the process, especially on the iPhone. This app makes it possible to resize batches of photos so you don’t have to adjust them one at a time. You can manually adjust the size or use common presets. You can specify photo DPI and video bitrate. You can even reformat files and resize images by stretching, ratio clipping and ratio filling. It makes it possible for you to resize an entire album in a photo library and it doesn’t matter what orientation they are. This app is available for free.

BattleHand

Since Blizzard launched Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, battle card games on iOS have grown in popularity. This game requires the actions of a card game, but instead of a simple tabletop, players watch the action of their hands unfold as they play. Grab a card from your hand and drag it to a friend or foe to perform the action. The screen shows the video game style animation as if you were playing a dungeon crawl. You can recruit heroes, compete against your buddy in PvP mode, and evolve your cards into something more powerful. This game is available for free.

CloudMagic for Mac

The company that makes the minimalist mail app of the same name is back with a version for the Mac. You can sign up with multiple mail accounts and color code them to keep track when viewing the unified inbox. You’ll get push notifications when you receive new mail and you can use Handoff to switch between the iOS and Mac versions. It features all the basic email actions, like reply, delete, and mark as read. Plus, the desktop version has keyboard shortcuts so you can archive a message simply by pressing “A.” This app is available for $19.99.

eMail Widget 2, Song of Pan, TIPIT and more apps to check out this weekend

January 02, 2016 by macjeff

It is officially 2016. Hopefully, last year treated you well, or at least didn’t cause you too much pain. With a new year, comes a new hope of things to come, and new apps and games to fill your time.

This week, thanks to the holidays, the App Store was a little dry. So, instead of focusing on brand new titles, we are presenting a general list of apps and games that we just think are cool.

1 Second Everyday

For the next 365 days, make a goal to grab one second of video footage. Capture one moment that sums up that day, even if it is just a POV shot of your desk at work. Then, using this app, stitch together your entire year in a slideshow that only lasts six minutes but encompasses everything you did for the past year. It’s like a Vine-sized video diary. You can make multiple timeline diaries that cover such things as what you ate for dinner every day, or which pair of sock you wore. Set up a notification to remind you to grab a one-second shot. You can also convert your one-second videos into animated GIFs. This app is available for free.

Nom Nom Paleo

At the beginning of each New Year, I try to set some sort of food-based resolution. Whether it’s cutting out fast food, quitting sugar, or going heavy on the meat-based meals, there is always a way to improve your health by reducing the amount of useless calories you eat. This app is a comprehensive recipe book by the team that created the blog of the same name. In it, you’ll find hundreds of simple Paleo-based recipes for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It features high-resolution photos for each step of the cooking process and tips and tricks for making things easier. If you are new to the Paleo diet, check out the 30-day sample meal plan to get you started. This app is available for $5.99.

eMail Widget 2

We told you about eMail Widget back in July, when it first launched. The app lets you access and deal with your emails right from Notification Center. You can archive, star, mark as read, tag as spam, and delete emails without needing to unlock your iPhone. The app was updated earlier this month with support for Outlook, Hotmail, iCloud, Office 365, and GMX. You can also set up multiple accounts with up to three widgets that will display in Notification Center on your device. This app is available for $0.99.

MOVIEQU

This app has been described as “the Shazam for movie trailers,” which is somewhat fitting. While a movie trailer is playing, open the app and tap the microphone and it will “listen” to the audio to tell you what is playing. This isn’t for finding out what the trailer is. It is highly unlikely you won’t already know that. It is for adding movies to your list of things to see. For example, while the trailer for Batman V Superman is playing, tap the microphone and a poster for the movie will appear. Add it to your “QU” and it will also automatically be added to your calendar with a reminder, so you won’t forget that it opens on March 25. This app is available for free.

Song of Pan

In this fun, simple game, players take control of a satyr on a mission to bring back Zeus’ wandering sheep. When you play your pan flute, the sheep follow. However, your music only lasts for so long. The goal is to figure out how to reach the sheep while playing your tunes and get them to follow you (without falling to their doom down some bottomless pit) to the holding tent. As you progress through the game, the gods of Olympus will try to mess you up with heavy rainfall, tornadoes, and fires. But, if you succeed, your father Zeus will reward you greatly. This game is available for free.

TIPIT

I love to shoot video of family outings, vacations, and other important events in my life. However, I don’t like to spend a lot of time editing them and making them into any sort of project that I could present to others. So, most of the time, no one sees my clips. This app makes it much easier to create fun videos without having to spend a lot of time on them. You can add auto-tracking captions and stickers, add some flare with video filters, and add the perfect soundtrack. If you don’t have your own videos to mess with, you can grab one from the TIPIT community. This app is available for free.

Tilt: Quill’s Quandry

In this fun little puzzle adventure, players control an adorable porcupine as he rolls his way through complex labyrinths to find the exit. Tilt your iPhone to get the little guy moving. Quill lives on the cutest pirate ship in the world and keeps getting trapped behind walls of crates. You can help him find a way out by tilting your iPhone even further to get the crates to move out of the way. If you make a mistake, you may accidentally trap poor Quill in an even worse situation. This game is available for $1.99.
