Modern Atlas, Lemon, VUE and other apps to check out this weekend

June 18, 2016 by macjeff

Whew! What a long week. Apple held its annual WWDC keynote on Monday, where it unveiled new versions of iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS, and we spent the rest of the week following up on those announcements. But now it’s time for the weekend, and we plan on kicking back and relaxing with some of our favorite new apps and games, which we’ve listed for you below.

Modern Atlas Travel Guide & City Maps

Folks looking to go on vacation this summer will definitely want to check out the Modern Atlas app. It features travel guides and maps to over 21,000 cities, and has information on more than 1.5 million landmarks and hidden gems. The guides are written by independent travelers from Wikivoyage / Wikitravel and contain the best places to see, eat, and sleep while on your trip. Apple Maps integration, with 3D Flyover, and a beautiful interface make this app a must-try. Modern Atlas is available for $0.99.

Lemon

Get to know your money with Lemon, an app that helps you stay up to date on everything happening with your finances. Lemon allows you to view all of your accounts in one place, gives you spending insights and budgeting tips, sends you reminders about upcoming charges, and offers customizable alerts for transactions and account balances. It even offers you deals for merchants you visit frequently. Lemon is available for free.

VUE

This one is for all of you amateur film-makers out there, or just folks who want to get more likes on their Instagram and Vine videos. VUE is a video editing app that offers a number of filters and effects to help make your clips more enticing. These tools include an easy montage creator, 30 designer stickers, 12 cinematic filters, and an ultra wide video mode. And of course, once you’re through creating your masterpiece, VUE lets you easily share the video with your favorite social network. This app is available for free.

Get ‘Em

Get ‘Em is an action-packed, open world game in which you play as superhero crime-fighting dogs, on a mission to track down the city’s most ruthless gangster. Essentially, a Yorkie named Leila has been dognapped, and three best friends come together to rescue her, with the ultimate goal of making the police K9 unit. It features beautiful 3D, comic book-like graphics and you can choose to either roam around freely, or complete set missions. Get ‘Em is available for $3.99.

Bonecrusher

Looking for a new arcade game to kill some time this weekend? Check out Bonecrusher. It sounds dark, but actually it’s a very simple, fun arcade title that is easy to play but tough to master. Players must embrace their inner bone collector and gather all the bones they can! Avoid the devastating spikes with power-ups and look cool doing it with a variety of different skulls. This is one of those games that you can pick up and play quickly, but be careful, because it could get very addicting! Bonecrusher is available for free.

Apple’s free app of the week: TextGrabber

June 16, 2016 by macjeff

Apple on Thursday updated its App of the Week promotion with the productivity app TextGrabber. This means that for the next 7 days, you’ll be able to download the popular OCR translation app for free on both iPhone and iPad—a solid savings of $5.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with TextGrabber, it easily and quickly scans, translates and saves your chosen text or QR-codes from virtually any printed material. All you have to do is take a picture, and TG handles the rest.

From the App Store Editors’ Notes:

Capturing printed words and magically morphing them into easy-to-edit digital text is TextGrabber’s bread and butter. But we love it nearly as much for the sci-fi cool factor of being able to instantly translate Italian restaurant menus, French Salon magazines, and Japanese graphic novels into our native language.

And here is a video of the app in action:

TextGrabber is available in the App Store for free.
