WhatsApp for iPhone gains 3x bigger emoji, zooming during video capture and more

After launching a desktop Mac app in May, Facebook-owned WhatsApp today gave its iPhone application a little love, with a new version now available on the App Store. WhatsApp 2.16.7 for iPhone includes three times bigger emoji when sent alone, a feature also found in iOS 10’s Messages app. In this release, you can now zoom when recording videos within the app and select multiple chats to quickly archive, delete or mark as read.

Plus, thanks to under-the-hood tweaks chats now open a lot faster than before.

On iOS 10’s Messages app, emoji characters are rendered three times bigger when sent alone.

On the previous version of WhatsApp, only the heart emoji was rendered bigger if sent alone, but the new version will now display any emoji three times larger—again, if sent alone one at a time.

As mentioned, you can now zoom when recording videos in WhatsApp just slide your finger up and down in the WhatsApp camera to zoom in or out during live video capture. You’ll also notice that tapping the Edit at the top of the Chats tab now lets you select multiple chats to quickly archive, delete or mark as read.

Viber for iPhone now lets you share, preview, delete and restore your stickers

Just like rival WhatsApp, the popular Rakuten-owned Viber messaging application pushed an update to its App Store app this morning, bumping version number to 6.2 whilst adding a few new features related to handling sticker packages within the app. You can now share sticker packages with others and preview stickers before sending one in a chat. And to preserve storage space on the device, there’s now the option to delete sticker packages you no longer use. Grab Viber for free on the App Store.

Share those stickers

Any sticker packages available in Viber’s Sticker Market can now be shared with contacts instantly. If someone specific comes to mind when you see a new sticker package, tap the Share button and select Forward via Viber to send a sticker package link to a Viber contact, or tap Share to bring up iOS’s multi-purpose Share sheet allowing you to choose from a list of third-party services installed on your device.

Preview and restore your stickers

Viber now provides a handy new option to restore your downloaded sticker packs, both free and paid, when installing Viber on a new device: in Sticker Market, tap the gear icon in the top right corner and then hit the Restore my Stickers button. The app will retrieve any previously downloaded sticker packs that are not on your device.

You can also preview a sticker before you send it to someone by long-tapping it.

Wipe stickers to free up space

And if you wish to delete a sticker package you no longer use in order to free up space on the device, you can now do that, too: in Sticker Market, tap the Edit button in the top right corner, swipe over the sticker pack you wish to remove, then tap Delete.

Money sending via Western Union

In addition to the above changes, Viber 6.2 for iOS now lets you send money via Western Union from the United States to contacts in ever more countries than before, supporting more than 200 countries and territories around the world. Viber first introduced this option in early-June.

Apple Maps Transit Info Launches in San Diego, California and British Columbia, Canada

Earlier in July, Apple Maps picked up transit information for Honolulu, Hawaii and Kansas City, Missouri. The expansion continues yet again.

Today, it’s been confirmed that Apple Maps transit information has expanded to two very different locations. That includes San Diego, California and many areas within British Columbia, Canada. In San Diego, specifically, transit information includes routes for the city’s trolley, which connects the East and South counties with downtown. There are buses in the area, but the trolley serves as the main light rail system.

In British Columbia, transit information is available in Vancouver, Victoria, and a variety of other cities. Transit info includes routing information for the rail systems in those cities, including the SkyTrain.

Recently, Maps picked up transit info for Atlanta, Georgia, and Miami, Florida, as well as adding support for the United Kingdom’s National Rail. On top of those new cities, Apple Maps has also added Portland, Oregon; Seattle, Washington; and Sacramento, California. Apple also added transit data in Rio de Janeiro ahead of the Summer Olympics, and Montreal got support earlier this year as well.
