This week's edition of our Apps of the Week roundup features a fun augmented reality app, a deck of cards that will help you mix up your fitness routine, and a two-way radio client. And as usual, we’ve got two great new games for you to check out.
This app isn’t new but with all of the augmented reality talk lately, I felt it was pertinent. Holo lets you add holograms of real people and animals into your world and take photos & videos to share with friends. Choose from a variety of holograms including movie characters, celebrities, athletes, musicians and comedians, as well as fun original characters and animals. New content added weekly. Now there are a few negative reviews complaining about performance, and this seems like something that could really benefit from Apple’s new ARKit. But it’s still worth checking out. Holo is available for free.
Sweat Deck is a deck of cards-style workout that will help you mix up your fitness routine with an endless combination of simple and effective workouts! The concept is simple: assign an exercise to each suit and perform them as cards are drawn from the deck—do you have what it takes to make it through an entire deck of cards? Features include a built-in list of common exercises to choose from, joker cards for adding an extra challenge, deck and rep multipliers for higher intensity workouts, and more. Sweat Deck is available for free (with one IAP).
Have an instant 2-way, push-to-talk audio connection with friends, family, or colleagues, without the burden of creating an account, logging in, or joining another social network. Now I know that there are other apps that do this, but the no-account needed really stood out to me. And some of you might be thinking if you have the cell service to download and use this app, why not just call the person? But I do think there are times and situations that are more conducive to 2-way radio-style conversations. Maybe a family uses this while camping, or at a theme park. Radio Callbox is available for free.
Touchdowners is a simple, yet crazy physics-based sports game where you need to grab the ball and touch it down in your opponents end zone. You control a team of three highly trained Touchdowners who must pass, wrestle and jump their way to the end zone then slam the ball to the ground. Features include an arcade mode with global rankings, and a head-to-head 2 player mode. Touchdowners is available for free (with a single IAP).
Age of Rivals was inspired by strategy boardgames and designed to be ideal for 1 or 2 players to play in 10 minutes with plenty of depth and replayability. It’s the “anti-deckbuilding” CCG, where having only minimal control over your deck encourages endless variety in each game and puts the focus on in-the-moment tactical decision-making. Unfortunately, there is no way to play this game offline at the moment (developers say they are working on that), but there are also no in-app purchases. All game content unlocks at a constant pace just by playing the game. Age of Rivals is available for $0.99.

Puzzle games are a serious rage on the App Store, but how do you find one that's fresh and unique? You could try out every single one and see which is best, and that might be fun. Then again, you could let me tell you about a new Tetris-like game that's tons of fun and has a unique spin. Let's take a look at Neon Poly.
TETRIS®
Electronic Arts Inc.
Bejeweled Classic
PopCap
Tetris® Blitz
Electronic Arts Inc.
Neon Poly is a Tetris-like game with an incredible twist. You don't have to race against the clock, for one thing, but the game also includes different types of game boards to choose from. You can play on a square, hexagon, or triangle board.
You start out with just the square boards, but there are various sizes of them to pick from. If you're really burning to try out a hexagon or triangle board, you can unlock it early with an in-app purchase. Otherwise, your high scores will unlock them in time.
You can also check your high scores for each type of board, buy XP to use for power-ups, and tweak the music and sound effects just to your liking.
Neon Poly is a terrifically fun game to play. It offers you various types of boards to solve, with unique and special shapes for each. Play through the square boards enough, and you can get the experience points you need to unlock the hexagon, and then the triangle board.
The music is very soothing, well suited to a game of this niche. You can place pieces wherever you want, so a good strategy is to place them so you can wipe out several lines at a time.
You can fill lines both horizontally and vertically, which really increases your chances at a high score. When you start running low of things to do, take advantage of the power-ups to get you going again. There are bombs, lightning strikes, and atomic blasts. You can also drop a hint, remove a piece, or add a piece.
There isn't a lot not to like about this game. It's very fun and enjoyable, with plenty of replay capability. The only thing I wasn't happy with was the frequency of the ads.
After you complete a game, you have to view an add, either a video or a game trailer. Luckily, a game could take you long enough that the ads won't get so annoying. However, if you really want to get rid of the ads altogether, Neon Poly does offer an in-app purchase for that.
All in all, this game is very close to being perfect. Almost all free games have ads these days, so my one nitpick isn't really much of one.
Neon Poly is very fun to play, and the fun only grows as you go. Unlocking new types of boards is a terrific feature, and the power-ups make things even more enjoyable. If you're looking for a great puzzle game, Neon Poly is a sure bet.

Apple on Thursday updated its App of the Week promotion with the game Telepaint. For the next 7 days, you can snag the paint-themed puzzler for free on both iPhone and iPad—a solid savings of $3.
From the App Store Editors’ Notes:
You’ll need to think through all the steps—and fast—if you want to help a friendly bucket splash his way through Telepaint’s obstacle-filled conundrums. By linking the right portals, you can pick up keys, unlock rooms, and send the bucket jogging in the right direction. But beware: the friendly bucket is always on the move—even when that means a long drop into a sharp spike pit. Telepaint is dripping with style: traversing each portal results in a delightful splatter of paint, and the picture waves and flickers like an old analog TV.
And here’s a clip of the game in action:
Telepaint is available in the App Store for free.
