Poker Hero Takes Texas Hold ‘Em to an Exciting New Level

It seems like everyone is playing Texas Hold ‘Em these days. From novices playing in their friend’s basement to aspiring multi-million dollar prize winners playing in a tournament in Vegas.

Either way there’s a good reason for the popularity, Texas Hold ‘Em is a fun game that, like all great games, is easy to learn yet difficult to master.

Poker Hero: Card Strategy does an incredible job of making an already great card game, Texas Hold ‘Em, even more fun, more entertaining and a total blast to play.

From an attractive layout by its designers to a solid execution by its developers, this game has lots to offer.

If you’re wondering what’s so great about Poker Hero: Card Strategy, by Candy Grill LLC, let’s start with how its array of features turns Texas Hold ‘Em on its head and makes it a game you won’t want to put down.

Getting started is simple enough, just open the app and before you know it the tutorial is walking you though the basics of betting and playing a hand against an opponent. This is great for anyone who is unfamiliar with the game and eases you right into the action.

You are quickly up and running, which is terrific, and introduced to the “enhancements” this game brings to the table (pun intended). They are called “abilities” and each one has its own special powers. Each “hero” you select comes with its own set of abilities.

There are over 50 abilities so you’re sure to find ones that you love using and get very comfortable with. Here are the first three that you’ll encounter. Day and Night redials the first and fifth community cards, Asceticism deals you 3 hole cards, and Vision let’s you see a random opponent’s card.

When you beat another player you earn gold and a reward. Plus, your first victory with every Hero earns you a trophy daily and they are the key to unlocking new Heros.

This really adds to the fun since each Hero comes with its own assortment of abilities. We especially like this added motivation, it keeps you coming back and learning more and more about the game.

As you win hands and beat other players you also move up to higher positions in the league with higher rewards that you get when the season’s over. There are 15 leagues in all starting with Tutorial III and going all the way up to the Grand Master League. In the 3 Tutorial Leagues the tutorial is active and offering advice so you’re hip to all new options instead of wondering what the f is going on.

Pretty cool if you ask me.

Appearance and Layout:

It’s pretty obvious the developers of this game are a talented bunch of nerds and artists. The game plays very fluidly and looks great.

At the same time, and very importantly, nothing is over done. There are no graphics, animations, or weird features that are just there to show off and distract you from having fun. Everything fits and makes sense.

The game is easy to navigate; figuring out how to take advantage of the different in-app features is easily done.

Whatever you “need to know” within the game is always clearly displayed, leaving little room for confusion.

Value:

Poker Hero: Card Strategy is free to download and so far we don’t see where IAPs are necessary.

First time players are led through the basics and so winning your first hand or two should come pretty quickly.

Further playing and moving up the ladder, however, does require you beat other players and earn gold. If you run out of gold you can buy more using real money. You can also buy “Orbs” which give you access to different skill cards.

As a whole, this game is tons of fun, easy to play, and you can likely play many hours, if not indefinitely, without spending a dime.

Poker Hero: Card Strategy requires iOS 7.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

BirdsIsle Review

Creating a semi-involving story for a match-3 game seems an impossible task. BirdsIsle, the new game from Amrita Studio, may have just managed it though.

It involves you collecting a crew of - you guessed it - birds in an ornitary by completing several stages that ask you to match up a colorful range of fruits and objects. You match them up by colorful vertically, horizontally, and even in grids of 2x2.

Moving these items is done by swiping on the touchscreen, and making lines or squares of four or more items will see you unlock certain power-ups, create explosions, or set off chain-reactions.

The Good

BirdsIsle

BirdsIsle may be a match-3 game, but that doesn’t mean it’s another generic entry in this most overcrowded of genres. This is in part down to the presentation, as mentioned above.

It gets you to care about these birds you group together. Their distinctive designs are one factor, and another is their adorable chirpings. We’re not talking about birdsongs either, but the various geographical and word facts they keep sharing with you. It’s somehow enjoyable to learn about the world. Who knew.

Then there are the clear and colorful in-game visuals, which make BirdsIsle an incredibly easy title to get to grips with. Even the in-app purchases aren’t as irritating as in other match-3 games. You can replay past levels to gain more coins and the like if needed, but we didn’t lean on this crutch too much to pass the latter stages.

What’s most impressive in BirdsIsle is how it asks you to play stages tactically straight off the bat. If you go in swiping mindlessly you won’t get far. Instead you have to make sure you clear a certain amount of items per stage, and often there are other obstacles to work your way around - including defending your board against wood-boring beetles.

You do this by matching up four or more objects in certain ways - such as in L-shapes or 2x2 squares - and gaining certain power-ups that are then essential in competing for that level’s main objective. It’s this need to think about the shapes you have to create that really helps BirdsIsle differentiate itself from its rivals.

The Bad

There’s ultimately no getting away from it - BirdsIsle is a match-3 game. Regardless of how many power-ups and intriguing gameplay gimmicks it throws at you, it’s impossible to escape the fact that you’ve played many titles like this before.

That’s not necessarily a deal-breaker, but if you go into BirdsIsle expecting it to blow the puzzle genre wide open you will be disappointed. Set your expectations accordingly and you’ll be very happy indeed though.

The Verdict

No it’s not the most original game in the world, but BirdsIsle has more than enough about it to make it well worth a look into anyone with even a passing interest in the puzzle game genre. You can download it via the App Store now.

BasketRoll is a Fun Endless Rolling Game

With the new NBA season upon us what better way to celebrate than to pick up a fun new basketball-themed iPhone game!

BasketRoll: Rolling Ball Game combines basketball and road racing in an endless runner frame and comes up with a fun new game.

Available for free through the iTunes Store, with ads and IAPs, this game is controlled like a first-person driving game but instead of racing a car you’re trying to keep a ball on the track while collecting as many points as possible.

Features:

BasketRoll, from Sergey Basko, challenges players to control the speed and direction of the rolling basketball (or soccer ball as well as some other fun designs) so that you hit as many stars as possible without falling off the track down to the forest below.

As you might expect, advancing in the game means that the challenges thrown in front of you get crazier and crazier and harder and harder to overcome. There will be ramps that you can fall off of, traffic cones that don’t kill you if you hit them but do stop you until you mange to get through the open space between two cones, giant fans that will test your timing, and more.

In the upper right corner you’ll see how many stars the board has and of those how many you’ve hit. A pause button is the upper left. Hitting this lets you adjust the speed of the ball, the tilt sensitivity and switch sounds, music and shadows on and off. Hit the “play” arrow to resume.

You can also go to the main screen but if you do that you can’t pick up where you left off, you have to start over again, usually after watching an ad.

Other options include selecting your choice of 25 ball styles, some of which you have to spend points to get, using coins to buy checkpoints or buying coins or combo packs with real money. You can also watch ads to get coins or checkpoints and see your detailed stats.

Appearance and Layout:

The graphics here are very well done and the whole game looks highly polished.

All controls are pretty simple to get to and since there aren’t too many of them, you’ll have it all down pat pretty quickly.

The movement of the ball and your progress along the track is very smooth, at least with more recent devices, so the game play is just what you want it to be. Very colorful with smooth animations.

Value:

BasketRoll is a free app. You can opt to pay $1.99 to go ad-free and buy coins or combo packs but you really don’t have to spend anything to enjoy this game for hours and hours. The ads that do appear are not much of a problem, they don’t pop up much and when they do you’ll see a full screen ad that you can cancel after 20 or 30 seconds.

BasketRoll is definitely a fun time wasting game and something you can just open and play. No big intro or complicated strategies. Just roll the ball as long as you can. How simple is that?

Overall, we found the game fun to play and easy to get started with. You may get bored with it after a while but so what? Download it for free and have some fun.
