Les Verbes Helps You Master French Verbs

July 31, 2019 by RSS Feed

Reviewed by Jimbo

Les Verbes by Wave Digital provides users with a straight-forward interactive technique for mastering verbs with their various tenses and conjugations in the French language.

Les Verbes can be customized to fit a user’s personal language skills and goals, and this app is currently available for free through the App Store.

Features:

Les Verbes does exactly what its name indicates—helps users learn French verbs and, by using the correct verb form and tense, you will improve your confidence and sound more fluent.

For anyone who has ever studied French, the issue of various conjugations and tenses is certainly one that he/she will have encountered and quite possibly struggled with.

Les Verbes is an app designed to help ease the struggles of the intermediate French student by providing interactive study challenges at the convenience of iOS devices. Unlike in simple flashcard memorization games, Les Verbes forces users to actually type in their answers to the various challenges.

This way, learning the correct spelling (and not just randomly guessing the answers) is a skill that is more likely to be acquired through using the app.

At this point in its (early) development the app supports 31 common verbs, from acheter to vouloir, across present, past, and future tenses. You can train on all of them or select a subset for more targeted training. The english translation of each verb is provided.

A typical drill will show you the english verb and a pronoun. So, for example, you might see “They go” and the answer starting with “ils”. For this one you would fill in the third person present tense form of “to go”. Every challenge also has a hint which tells you the french infinitive and what tense is required.

You can opt for daily reminders, at the time you prefer, to do the drills but can only start on Monday. It would be helpful if you could select the day you want to start, or restart, your sessions.

Aside from more verbs, more tenses (i.e. “le Plus-Que-Parfait”) and real world sentences, we’d like to see voice output so you can hear the correct pronunciation of the various challenges, as well as voice input for your answer so you can train on both writing and speaking.

It should be noted, however, that the developers of this app let you know that they will be expanding the list of verbs and are happy to hear your feedback for additional features.

Appearance and Layout:

Les Verbes iPhone App

The overall appearance of this app can best be described as “practical.” All of the graphics and various aspects of the aesthetic design of Les Verbes are utilitarian towards quick practice drills.

We appreciate this and for what it is, the design gets the job done.

Les Verbes features a simple user interface that can be easily navigated with no need for prior instructions.

Users can choose to start their training or select the settings symbol in the upper right to change any of the default settings.

As stated by the deveopers, this app is targeted at the intermediate skill level, so the expectation is that you know these verbs but can benefit from some practice.

Value:

Les Verbes is a free app and is a worthwhile addition to the language learning folder of anyone who is seeking to improve their knowledge of french verbs and feels they would benefit from a brief daily verb drill.

Specifically speaking, Les Verbes will best suit the needs of anyone who is having difficulty mastering the use of verbs within the french language.

Les Verbes requires iOS 9.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

Baby’s Musical Hands is Perfect for Your Curious Toddler

June 04, 2019 by RSS Feed

Reviewed by Jimbo

Baby’s Musical Hands is an incredible app that provides a playful musical experience for preschoolers.

This well-designed app is sure to delight as it taps into your toddlers natural interest in music.

Features:

As indicated by its name, Baby’s Musical Hands, an app by Streaming Colour Studios, features a music environment for preschoolers that is focused on touching the iPad’s screen to make music.

To be blunt, it’s simply wonderful, with the emphasis on “simply”. The beauty of this app is what it doesn’t do. It doesn’t have any ads, IAPs, menus, cautions, instructions, parental  guidelines or anything.

It is a screen of large colored squares that respond to touch with the sound of an instrument and a circular burst as visual feedback.

Reddish squares will make sounds as if you’ve hit a drum or symbols, yellowish squares sound like the pluck of a guitar, and bluish squares sound like a keyboard.

While the options are limited there are some that are pretty neat. You don’t have to just touch one square, your toddler can hit lots of squares at the same time for a bit of a muddle of sounds but a very nice visual effect.

Also, if your rugrat drags their finger along the screen they will see one burst but they will hear all the different sounds each square makes.

Appearance and Layout:

Baby’s Musical Hands iPad App

The graphics of this app are certainly age appropriate. Although incredibly simple, this simplicity helps keep the focus of the app on its intended activity.

There is no navigation or training needed so a young child can figure out how to play the game on his or her own with minimal assistance. That is, just put the iPad in front of them with the app running.

Keep in mind that you can disable the home button so your child cannot accidentally exit the app. This can be accomplished in iOS 6 or later via Guided Access in the Accessibility options in Settings and can be done for any app, not just this one.

As a whole, the appearance and layout of Baby’s Musical Hands perfectly aligns with its intended purpose.

Value:

Baby’s Musical Hands will run you a buck to download. This is an incredible deal given the joy it will no doubt bring to your child.

Overall, the value of this app compared to others designed for toddlers is quite exceptional in our opinion.

Baby’s Musical Hands is a fun app that will delight your preschooler while providing a safe play space for them to explore musical sounds.

Baby’s Musical Hands requires iOS 8.0 or later and is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

MU Origin 2 Review

June 04, 2019 by RSS Feed

It’s a wonder the coders at Webzen find time to sleep. Over the last couple of years they’ve rolled out an impressive number of content updates for RPG MU Origin, taking it all the way up to version 7, and yet they’ve somehow found time to make MU Origin 2 as well.

MU ORIGIN 2 -WEBZEN Officially

This latest addition to the MU franchise - which started life as a web game back in 2001 - doesn’t take any major risks. In fact, its overriding priority is to give you the smoothest, easiest RPG experience possible. How you’ll feel about that depends on what kind of gamer you are.

The word that best describes MU Origin 2 is “streamlined”. In that spirit, you get just three character types to choose from at the outset: Dark Knight, Dark Wizard, and Elf. And it’s just a short hop from picking an avatar to taking on story quests.

These are dispensed by NPCs with an endless supply of odd jobs to dish out, normally involving the killing of monsters. Once you accept a story quest, by simply tapping a prompt on the left of the screen, you automatically towards the action.

You automatically kill the enemies you find there, too, though returning to the quest-giver to receive your reward seemingly constitutes a new quest.

Naturally, there are non-story quests too. These are designed to keep you moving in the right direction, progress-wise, by encouraging you to make use of modes and features as they become available, such as the Guild, the dungeons, and the Auction.

There are also daily quests, and innumerable kill quests. Interestingly, these involve not only killing ten of X monsters, but killing waves of monsters by travelling around and finding them on the location map. A single quest can see you terminating over a hundred monsters, all without touching the screen.

MU Origin 2 has a definite autopilot vibe, and that partly extends to the RPG admin. For instance, when you pick up an item a button appears allowing you to equip it right away, without going into your inventory, and you can transfer an item’s enhancement level to a new one too.

The Good

MU ORIGIN 2 -WEBZEN Officially

However, MU Origin 2 is not entirely an autopilot affair. While the opening few hours are more than usually streamlined, eventually you’ll need to start paying close attention if you want to get anywhere.

That point comes at around level 150. The first 100 levels fly past in a haze, as you romp invincibly through all the battles the game has to throw at you. Your Zen (the game’s most abundant currency) is seemingly never-ending, and you level-up at breakneck speed.

But things start slowing down after that. Upgrading your skills gets more expensive as the level gets higher, and you acquire more skills to boot, so you start running out of Zen. And the pace of your levelling up slows too, which often means you can’t take on story quests until you’ve scraped together some more XP.

This in turn forces you to make some decisions - about how to spend your limited Zen, and which activities to engage in to help you progress the fastest. Do you jump into an event like the EXP Dungeon or the Guild Battlefield, or do you take on a simple single-player dungeon or Infinite Tower instead?

Or you can throw off the shackles entirely and just explore the areas of the MU continent that you’ve unlocked so far. Movement is handled with a virtual stick on the left while your skills are arrayed on the right. Using these inputs you can maraud around Atlans, killing fishy things, or Devias, killing yetis.

There’s a rich variety of monsters to kill and environments to kill them in, and while technically the visuals are only so-so the designs are interesting and varied.

The Bad

MU ORIGIN 2 -WEBZEN Officially

Presentation is not a generally strong point for the game, with tiny, poorly localized text and ropey voice audio leaving a bad taste. As stated previously the game can feel like it’s on auto-pilot at times.

The Verdict

MU Origin 2 is not revolutionary, but it’s worthy of the MU license. While there’s plenty to keep you busy, and all the staples of the mobile RPG genre are here, you’ll enjoy it most if you like your RPGs fairly lightweight.
